During the summer of 2012, I met two people who drastically altered my life. Martha and Arnold are just two of the thousands of poor Kentuckians that live in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Over a period of 8 weeks, I was able to spend a great amount of time while serving them through a mission based Christian camp program. After I had spent time with Martha and Arnold, I discovered they were two individuals who had been preserved through life. Rather than being destroyed or abandoned, they were able to change and adapt to the situations around them. In this way, they were able to survive through persistent adaptation. This idea is also reflected in their home, a periodically resuscitated 150-year-old log cabin. The renovations are as timely as a snake’s molting and just as necessary. Martha and Arnold’s way of life is a compelling one, one that triggers self-examination and reflection.
