Alan Chiang

Alan Chiang (b.1991) is an artist based in Atlanta, GA. He received a B.F.A. in Printmaking from the Savannah College Of Art And Design in 2013. He is known for his irreverent and humorous illustration style, which has been mentioned in Vice Magazine. Photography has always been incorporated into his creative process, but it wasn’t until documenting a trip to Brazil that it became clear to him that photography allowed him to explore more serious and personal subject matter. Combining moments of chance and passion for preservation, Alan encapsulates the purity of a moment. Today we share his series titled Rio Claro, SP.

Rio Claro, SP

My entire extended family lives in Brazil. My mother is the only one in her family that ever moved away. Growing up thousands of miles away, I spent all of my summers in Rio Claro visiting family. Brazil became a geographical representation of family. The places I visited were as special to me as the family I saw. I feel as strong of a connection to my Grandfather’s farm as I do to my Grandfather himself. My Grandparents’ house is as much a part of the family as they are. These places and people are inextricably connected. This series is about documenting the place and it’s connections to both family and the past.
