Thomas Pearson (b. 1984, Mississippi) is a photographer interested in using photography to explore culture, identity, landscape and the idea of place. He grew up in South Florida and studied photojournalism at The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg where he currently lives. Today we share his series The Pines.
The Pines
The Pines is a collection of images that were made in 2013 and 2014, mostly in South Mississippi. Though the name of the series is a reference to the region of Mississippi known as the Piney Woods, it has expanded to include pictures made in West Tennessee, the Florida Panhandle and Alabama while on road trips to visit family and friends. To me, The Pines reflects a sense of emptiness and longing, and describes aspects of my own memory as well as a complicated, stubborn affection for where I come from.
