Stephen Harper

Stephen Harper (b.1987) is a self-taught photographer from Calgary, AB. He maintains a diverse practice with photography being the basis of his work. Stephen has shown work internationally and contributed to various collaborative publications. He has also stepped into the curatorial role with Sled Islands Back Box Gallery while simultaneously documenting the festival. Stephen frequently collaborates with artist JaneTrash on studio-based projects, often incorporating film and sculpture into the work. He self-published his series Hank in 2013 and is in the process of doing the same with his most recent project, Coasting.

“Stephen first began documenting the North American landscape in 2011 and has since spent months traveling throughout several states and provinces. The third and most recent example of this concept is his project Coasting. Shot over the course of one month in the summer of 2013, it records time spent meandering down the West coast with no particular plan or destination. The series showcases a very diverse American landscape, while also revealing the inevitable changes brought about by perusing a more nomadic lifestyle.”
