Jolson Diaz

Jolson Diaz is a 22 year old freelance photographer from Miami Gardens, FL. His preference for film stems from taking black and white photography classes at Florida International University, where he learned to develop and print in a darkroom. He felt drawn to the process of seeing an image come to life and working with his own two hands to create a photograph from scratch. His personal work includes a wide range of subjects that include people and animals, as well as nature and machine, and he holds an appreciation for both simplicity and color. He enjoys giving himself specific projects to work on and creating zines to display his work in a physical format. He has worked on an ad for Ball and Chain Society and has been featured in London Based, Meanwhile Press, Locals No.3 zine.

Whips Volume 2

‘Whips’ is a project Jolson has been working on for the past two years. The first volume was released in April 2015 and a year later he completed the second. This project was shot entirely using 120mm film and includes a variety of cars shot all throughout South Florida. He enjoys the thrill of driving in his car, getting lost in neighborhoods with his Hasselblad sitting in the passenger seat and finding that one car that captures his eye. As he attempts to capture the loneliness and abandonment of a car that was left to be forgotten, much like the front-yard of the house it usually sits on, as well as the details, simplicity and beauty that comes along with it.
