Catherine Canac-Marquis is an emerging photographer based in Montreal. Her work addresses the notion of isolation. She is particularly interested in the concept of insularity. She was born in Quebec City, and studied graphic design there before spending several months in Reykjavik, Iceland. She is currently pursuing a B.F.A. with a Major in Photography at Concordia University. Her work has been exhibited in Montreal and Toronto.
The Keepers
The Keepers is a documentary project about a private island and its two guardians. These images were created in the summer of 2015. Catherine spent a week on Île au Ruau, an island located in the middle of the St. Lawrence River approximately 40 km downstream of Quebec City. It was once used to collect firewood, but it’s now a privately owned hunting ground. It has been cared for by the same couple for over 38 years. The series documents the geographical space, as well as the guardians intimate relationship with the island. It is based on geographical and social references, as well as research done by the historian Jacques Lemieux.
