Mamie Heldman

Mamie Heldman is a writer and documentary photographer currently based in Brooklyn. Born in Nashville, Tennessee, she graduated with a degree in Communications at the University of Tennessee, where she focused her research on interpersonal levels of self-disclosure. She studied photography under Hally Pancer in Paris, and in 2016 completed the one-year certificate program in Documentary Practice and Visual Journalism at the International Center of Photography. Through portraiture, Mamie is currently exploring themes of identity, intimacy and relationships. Through conversation and collaboration, she seeks to work with her subjects to represent authentic moments as well as poetic interpretations.

Most people think of the word family in relation to blood, however membership can be gained through shared experiences, momentary interconnectivity, history and commonality. As young adults emerge into the world and move away from the various forms of community that have defined their sense of belonging, there is an intuitive search to form surrogate familial bonds that go beyond companionship, but lend directly to the integral pathway of self-identity.
