The Space Between

According to the 2010 U.S. Census, it was estimated that 82% of the population of the United States lives within the boundaries of an urbanized areas. Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Washington DC, and other major cities – combined these areas occupy about 2% of the physical United States. Smooth asphalt, carefully manicured golf courses, air conditioned shopping malls, high-rise buildings, apartment complexes and pulsating neon lights are but a fraction of the land left often unseen. Far beyond the borderlines of these sprawling urban cities lies a vast and desolate land, filled with breathtaking vistas and incredible contrasts. Forgotten towns, power lines seemingly placed in the middle of nowhere, wild horses, abandoned gas stations, run down vehicles, hitchhikers, empty hotels, and gently falling snow are all part of this unique and often unseen world. The purpose of “The Space Between” is to give light to these forgotten spaces, and the people who inhabit them. I have spent the last year traveling the USA by car, pulling over on the side of the road to take a quick snapshot and then moving onto the next place. The majority of these photographs were taken during the summer of 2016, through the beginning of 2017.
