Michael Wriston

Michael Wriston is a self-taught American documentary photographer based in Georgia. His work follows the evolving social landscape of the American South. From the dominating religious iconography across the countryside, to the growth and stagnation of its cities, Wriston’s photography captures the spirit and mystery of this languid, idyllic land.

Rock of Ages

In “Rock of Ages,” Michael Wriston documents the elemental presence of Christian iconography in the Bible Belt. By exploring the back roads and state routes between Georgia and North Carolina for nearly two years, Wriston has catalogued evangelical imagery and abandoned churches, and their place within a landscape consumed by kudzu and economic stagnation. This project makes no attempt to comment on religion as a whole, but instead aims to distill the impact religion has had on the physical landscape of the American South.
