Clay Lipsky (b.1974 USA) is a visual artist living in Los Angeles, California. An Emmy Award winning graphic designer, his career encompasses work in television, film, music videos, print and multimedia. Growing up his focus ever shifted from illustration to photography, cinema, graphic design and animation. That’s still how he rolls today. His photography has been exhibited and published internationally, most notably at the United Nations in Vienna and New York City, Galerie le Carré d’Art (France), Lishui Photo Festival (China), National Museum of Contemporary Art (Romania), The Annenberg Space for Photography (USA), the Smithsonian’s National Atomic Testing Museum (USA) and with Esquire Russia. Additionally Clay serves as Art Director for the photoblog LENSCRATCH.
Landescapes
Drive eastward from Los Angeles, beyond the suburban labyrinths and industrialized tracts, and you will encounter a vast desert. Bleak, arid landscapes stretch on for miles yet despite the environmental adversity, the thumbprint of man is still evident. Skeletal remains of failed attempts to inhabit this environment punctuate the desert horizon. Abandoned homes and artifacts are strewn about, slowly succumbing to the brutality of the elements. One can only imagine the isolation and adversity that comes from living at the fringe of society. Sagging windows frame views that are both beautiful and condemning. The timeless scenery outside, forged over a millennia, is suddenly transformed into living art now hanging on tired walls. Each shack represents a story, a life, that has come and gone. The desert will eventually reclaim these artifacts, but for now this is modern archeology along roads few have traveled.
