Paul Yurkovich

Paul Yurkovich is a fine art/documentary photographer currently based in Madison, WI. He received his BFA from Columbia College Chicago in 2003. Aside from a brief stint in California, he has lived exclusively in Midwestwest. Paul has shown at Newspace Center for Photography in Portland, OR, Glass Curtain Gallery in Chicago, IL, Midwest Center for Photography in Wichita, KS, and most recently at the Overture Center in Madison, WI. He is fascinated by landscapes and artifacts that seemingly hold little to no aesthetic or symbolic value to the vast majority of passers-by, and how that value is changed when decontextualized and viewed under the right conditions. The series presented here is centered around that fascination.

Near the Roadside

In Near the Roadside, subjects and locations were found while driving not too far out the range of my various commutes; to work, to a friend’s house, to the grocery store, etc. This project, through the familiar, and, in this case, abbreviated vein of American road trip photography, brings to the fore scenes that highlight the arresting juxtaposition that exists in the places between our daily destinations. These familiar yet removed spectacles, when contemplated and viewed in stillness, allude to the comedy, tragedy and absurdity contained within our everyday.
