Scott Alberg

Scott Alberg (b. 1975) lives in Boston, Massachusetts. He holds a M.F.A. degree from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and a B.A. in Art History from Boston University. He has exhibited at Project Basho, Photographic Resource Center, Aviary Gallery, New England School of Photography, Oni Gallery, and Washington Street Art Center.

Alberg teaches photography at Framingham High School in Framingham, Massachusetts. He has previously taught at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Cheyenne High School, North Las Vegas, and Acton-Boxborough Regional High School. He previously worked at the Polaroid Collection in Cambridge, MA and Gateway Arts in Brookline, MA.

Summaville

Summaville explores various abstractions, surfaces, and layerings of time within Post-Recession Las Vegas. I’m particularly interested in anomalous occurrences in the desert landscape and the way the desert, and suburban landscape, can be both seductive and repellant at the same time. I find in a lot of these spaces a strange imaginative potential.

I am very interested in the capacity of photography to create an experience for the viewer that is at once absorptive and distancing. I find fascinating the inherent transformational ability of the medium as scenes in front of the camera lens become ambiguous, open-ended, strange, and fictionalized despite the clarity and formal structure of the final image.

Many of these photographs occurred specifically within the confines of Summerlin, one of the largest “master-planned” communities in the United States. My family lived in Summerlin for over 20 years. It was a second home to me. Nearly every Summerlin tree planting and lot size has been decided upon within its “master-plan” since the mid-1990s. In the mid-1980s a proposed (though ultimately rejected) name for this new community about to be built was Summaville, a “summary-city” that would evoke past, present and future. I feel this disregarded name nicely encapsulates my project.
