Lance Brewer

Brewer received his BFA from California College of the Arts in 2009 and an MFA from Yale School of Art in 2017. In 2011, he was an Artist-in-Residence at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. His work has been exhibited work at Danziger Gallery, New York; Shulamit Nazarian, Los Angeles; and Casemore Kirkeby, San Francisco. Brewer’s images and writing have been published in Spinoza Beyond Philosophy (Edinburgh University Press). He currently lives and works in New York City.

The images in this body of work compose a disparate range of subjects: psychological experiments, a homemade talk show, mirrors which serve as a portal to a world of converging images, and a generic lawn chair, broken and remade into an alien signifier, among others. These all are scenes of desire, imagination, and creativity embedded in but isolated from, a fractured real.

The spaces in my work are characterized by their alterity. The characters mirror what I seek as an artist, the desire to connect with each other and engage the construction of worlds.

What We've Read!

At Aint-Bad we are dedicated to photography and printed matter. From our magazines to our artist monographs, the printed page is what we live for. Each month we will gather books that catch our eyes and build an online library with the hope to inspire and support fellow bookmakers out there.
