|Organization||Rebecca Vassie Trust|
|Title||Rebecca Vassie Memorial Award 2020|
The Rebecca Vassie Trust announces the fourth annual Rebecca Vassie Memorial Award for emerging photographers, which includes a cash bursary of £2,000.
The award, which funds an early-career photographer in the UK to undertake a narrative photography project, also includes more than £1,000-worth of premier printing at Metro Imaging plus support towards industry and public exposure.
Applicants for the award, are asked to submit a proposal setting out a compelling vision for a narrative photography project with a social or political context.
In addition, up to twelve longlisted applicants join the trust’s Development Network, which offers smaller grants towards educational projects and professional development throughout the year.
Judges for the award include Caroline Hunter (picture editor, Guardian Weekend magazine), Phil Coomes (picture editor, BBC News Online) and Jennifer Thatcher (critic, curator and lecturer).
The award was created in memory of Rebecca Vassie, a British photographer and photojournalist who died suddenly, aged 30, while on assignment in Uganda in March 2015.
|Requirements / Eligibility|
The award is open to photographers who are either (i) UK citizens or (ii) currently resident in the UK.
The award is for photographers at early-to-mid career stage. By this we mean a working professional photographer, probably trained, with strong and relevant experience – but who does not yet earn a full living wage from their preferred style of photographic work.
There is no age limitation, and no requirement for art school or university education.
We warmly encourage photographers from culturally diverse backgrounds, those whose gender identity is non-binary, and those with disabilities.
Please note that we do not fund current undergraduates, or full-time students on any course. We do not fund work that forms part of a postgraduate degree. Most applicants who make it through to our longlist have been working professionally as photographers for at least 2 years.
