Description

The New Orleans Photo Alliance invites entries for its 2020 Members exhibition On the Line. We are seeking lens-based work exploring beginnings, endings, and states of transition; of crossing borders both physical and metaphorical; or of capturing moments of departure, growth, and even regression. Artists are encouraged to interpret the themes of the exhibition broadly, which could range in scale from reflection on global humanitarian and environmental concerns, to a changing cityscape, to daily rituals and personal identity. Gathered together, the works accepted for On the Line will push us to consider how photography – which, it could be said both freezes time or frees time – could also help us explore the notions of liminal states or movement across threshholds both real and metaphorical.

This show will be curated by Brian Piper. Brian is the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Assistant Curator for Photography at the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA). He holds a PhD in American Studies from the College of William & Mary (2016), supported by dissertation fellowships from the Smithsonian Institution and Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. At NOMA, his curatorial credits include the contemporary exhibition “Changing Course: Reflections on New Orleans Histories,” “Lee Friedlander in Louisiana,” and “You Are Here: A Brief History of Photography and Place.” He is currently developing an exhibition about the work of African American studio photographers during the Long Civil Rights Movement.
